Interaction Theories Essay A. Compare and contrast two of the models or theories presented in this chapter considering their usefulness in practice, research, education and administration. For the purposes of this discussion, I have selected King’s Theory of Goal Attainment and Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations. On a broad perspective, both theories aim at explaining the interaction processes that happen between a nurse and her patient. Imogene King’s basic assumption of her theory is that the nurse and the client communicate information, set goals mutually, and act to attain those goals. The same can actually be said with Peplau’s theory wherein she states that nursing is an interpersonal process because it involves interaction between two or more individuals with a common goal, the attainment of which is achieved through the use of a series of steps, and that the nurse and patient work together so both become mature and knowledgeable in the process. A lot of similarities can be seen from both works as they try to explain the nursing process in a nurse-patient interaction level. see fig. 1) The concepts of person, health, environment and nursing are recurring themes on both theories as they attempt to integrate it with each of their own interaction models. The deviation between the two theories occur where the focus of their study lie in the current nursing practice. King focused on the major concept of interacting systems: Personal, interpersonal and social systems, and how the accuracy of determining which system is most applicable would lead to eventual tra nsaction. Because of the severity of her condition, the emergency room nurses attending for this particular patient immediately began taking actions to stabilize her condition, such as securing an IV line, drawing blood for labs, applying oxygen and doing an ECG all at the same time. When asked by a nurse to take her ordered dose of aspirin the patient fearfully verbalized, â€Å"What are you doing to me? † Soon after, when the patient’s condition did not significantly improve but got worse, the physician advised the husband that patient be brought to the cardiac catheterization laboratory for an angiogram. The client was adamant that she did not want to take drastic measures, but the husband indicated that he wanted whatever was necessary to improve his wife’s condition. This is an excellent example of a client losing the sense of self-hood. In regard to the concept of self, King (1981) stated â€Å"If nurses and other professionals interact with patients or clients as human beings, and let the individuals be themselves, nurses and patients would help each other grow in self-awareness and in understanding of human behavior, especially in stressful life experiences. † In an environment that requires one to be reactive and responsive, clients often perceive nurses as being too busy or too hurried. King (1981) encouraged nurses to be aware of how they present themselves to their clients because the manner in which nurses enter a client’s room sets the tone for the entire encounter. Poor communication skills lead to poor transactions and interactions between the nurse and the client. Poor communication skills also affect goal setting and goal attainment (Williams, 2001). It is solely because of this perception that proper â€Å"scripting† with the patients has been constantly reiterated to all nursing personnel and including even the support staff. In stark contrast with the example presented above, here is a situation where King’s Theory of Goal Attainment was used in the emergency room setting. Patient ST, a 32-year old male trauma patient who went to the emergency room due to a traumatic amputation of an arm secondary to a motor vehicle accident. The assessment phase of the nursing process can take in the concepts associated with the personal system. Once the patient has been hemodynamically stabilized, the nurse’s attention is now focused on assisting the patient cope with the feelings of loss, separation and anger that he is experiencing. The patient’s feelings of perception, self body image, growth and development, time and space must be considered after doing the primary survey of airway, breathing and circulation. In fact, this is even specified in my institution’s â€Å"Emergency Room Nursing Database† in its attempts to fulfill the JCI requirements in documentation. Attempting to restore the patient’s self-esteem in the light of the traumatic loss is a mutually established goal between the nurse and the client. It is also important for the nurse to realize that the patient’s perceptual field is narrowed because of the pain and emotion that he is currently experiencing. King’s theory highlights the importance of the participation of the individuals in decision making and deals with the choices, alternatives, and outcomes of nursing care. The theory offers insight into the nurses’ interactions with the individuals and groups within the environment (Williams, 2001). Element of the theory of Imogene King is usually applied specifically in interpersonal and social systems. More often than not, the mode of interaction being used in the emergency department is a dyad (2 people interacting), where the perception of a patient is changed because of a communication that takes place providing education to a patient with knowledge deficit. Such an example occurs in ensuring a patient and its significant others’ compliance; if the patient does not understand the importance of a certain intervention or medication, cooperation and adherence will be very difficult to achieve. But once the nurse educates them with proper nurse-patient interaction and therapeutic communication, compliance and adherence to medical regimen can be achieved. King’s Goal Attainment Theory (Client-Centered Theory) is indeed what we are practicing in the daily routine of the hospital and in any other clinical setting. Giving the patient the pertinent information of what is going to happen or what is happening will lessen the patient’s anxiety that contributes to tachycardia, restlessness and give them a sense of control of the situation.

The people who came to America from different countries brought their traditions, their families, and their culture. These three things stuck with them through thick and thin and are still thriving parts of what America is today. Many immigrants came with literally nothing in their pockets and had to work their way to success. The Immigrant Experience by Thomas Wheeler tells the story of nine different immigrants' trials and tribulations of coming and living in America. Each immigrant went through different experiences of becoming American but they also had their similarities. Four things that attributed to the assimilation of the immigrants are: language, money, religion, and ambition. Each immigrant experienced their individual trials, but they still all had several similarities. Almost all of the immigrants in this book came to America without being able to speak English, except for the immigrant from London. Alan Pryce-Jones came to America able to speak English and this put him at an advantage over the other immigrants because he could communicate with Americans. Also, he came to America after he established his writing in Europe. He came with money and wisdom which set him far above the other immigrants. The immigrants who couldn't speak English had to take classes and settle for low paying jobs because they could not communicate with their bosses. If they weren't working for someone else, they entrepreneured their own business. William Alfred, the Irish immigrant, was raised by a grandmother who owned her own business. This made it a little easier for him to find a job, and bring in money. J... ...America and living here made them American. But, they all brought over their own traditions and culture that still affect families today. Americans all have the outer candy coatings, but each peanut inside is different. The peanuts make the M & M's what they are. The outer appearance is the same but the inward structure is not. The peanuts do not affect the way the M & M looks but they sure do affect the way they taste. Next time you go to eat an M & M think about what America is. Is it a group of people who are all the same and have conformed to each other so that you cannot distinguish one from another? Or is America like a bowl of peanut M & M's where you can see how every one is similar but each individual is different on the inside? They may look American. They may act American. They may very well be American, but they cannot neglect their ancestry roots.

In this day and age I feel there Is so many kids who have something to say,to stand for- whether it be good or bad, but they hide behind a faux docile nature just because we are so different- what with the clothes we wear, the music on our [Pods, our financial status, our sexuality,etc†¦ Regardless though, we still seem to find ourselves all lost in the system. Thrown out to the wolves- by whomever. My Intention for this Is not to glorify rolling or any act that would potentially lead to turmoil.Because for some kids who have Just had enough of the bullying and neglect when they hear songs Like â€Å"The Happiest Days of our Elves(Brick In the Wall)† or see things on television it strikes the wrong chord and that's perhaps why some kids do school shootouts and that kind of thing. No one sees those kids as troubled though. The media and their communities dub them as newer do-wells and send them to rot away in prison. They never had a chance; just to be born into the system and die in it too.It is disheartening to try and fathom how in this situation kids just on the brink of starting their own lives take those of the kids who are, also. When in the end it was lust a wild impulsive action fueled by their own inner discontent, that will more than likely be regretted forever. By then though it's too late. I hope more is being done to revert these kind of problems in our society and also Just bring some sense of belonging to the kids who have the strong personalities and eccentricities.People need to make a difference for the youth, so that the youth can make a difference for the world. This should be the same for the media, government, and pop-culture also. Media doesnt show any other role of Muslims besides being violent, anti-American. They depict Muslims and Islamic countries as hotbeds of fanaticism, full of Muslim men who enslave their wives, movies such as Not Without My Daughter serve to warn American women about the dangers of inter-racial marriage, which is totally mis-representation of the Islamic religion. Its true that in every religion there are people who are willing to connect and relate with other religions, and also there are people who take the religion very extremely by manipulating and using the religion according to their own belief/ mind set. Actions from such people do no reflect the belief system of entire religion. There are lot of American Muslims who achieved fame in American art and Culture such as Hasan Minhaj, Aziz Ansari are few of the outspoken American Muslims taking representation of Muslims in America to positive and friendly level. In a New York Times op-ed, Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family, Aziz wrote that people in American culture associate Muslim less with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or the kid who left the boy band One Direction than with a scary terrorist character from Homeland or some monster from the news. Shahzia in her work named Utopia, in the post 9/11 context tries to think about the world in different ways, including taking on icons like American flag and inflecting it with her own meaning. Utopia, help better situate the cultural divide and argue for seeing cultural reading not as mutually exclusive but necessary for seeing any work of art. In such images, times like 9/11 are being created in the ways various histories are being retold through art.   Larita Dixon, in her painting of Hijabis describe that, in this work, she wanted to show the fun side of Muslims, her aim is to show people that Muslims are just like everyone else. Another artist Kelly Izdihar Crosby, in her painting of Tapestry of Sisterhood, states that she is touched by the diversity of Islamic global community and thats the reason she created a montage of Muslim women wearing turbans, hijabs, wraps and no hijab. The reason behind the painting was that she wanted to show the beauty and diversity of Muslim women in terms of how they outwardly reflect their faith. The mainstream image of Muslim women is one dimensions, and this piece offers the viewer an alternative to that monolithic stereotype towards Muslim woman. Female Muslim comedians such as Tissa Hami had to deal with issues surrounding the hijab. She often starts off wearing the hijab and half way through her act she removes it, to illustrate that she is same women regardless of what she wears on her head. This act has much bigger impact which makes a point on larger context. She wants to prove that no all veiled Muslim women are silent or oppressed or terrorist. A veiled woman isnt someone to fear from, because no matter she wears hijab or not, she is the same person.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   At the end, one way or the other, American media must change how they portray Muslim Americans. Muslim Americans have same rights and freedoms as every other citizen of this country does, regardless of their ethnicity, religion and race. Acts carried out by few individuals does not reflect the ideology of the whole community or religion. In order to reduce violence, stereotypes, and prejudice among communities, media needs to portray every individual, community as same, rather than picking on one religion to expand the hate crime against the religion.
